A number of Facebook users are complaining of the fact that some of their photo albums have mysteriously disappeared from their profiles. Looking at the Facebook Community Forums, dozens of users are experiencing problems, with one writing:
“Some Photo albums not appearing on my timeline, sometime disappearing and reappearing after they have been published, most specifically for Sept & October 2012. My album count is correct but they should be appearing on my timeline which they are not.”
There were further complaints of not being able to see as many individual albums as Facebook listed in the total at the top of the page, while some users said they weren’t able to see all of the photos that they know are in an album.
The first post in this comment thread goes back to 6th January 2013, but even today – some two months later – users are still commenting saying that they are having problems seeing Facebook albums.
A couple of the people who commented tried using SocialSafe to download albums from Facebook, and from their mixed successes we can deduce that Facebook’s problem may be two-fold:
- One user was able to download all of her albums with SocialSafe, despite the fact that they were not visible on Facebook – this would indicate that the albums are still there and that Facebook has an issue displaying them.
- Another user was only able to download seven new albums that she had posted – this implies that Facebook might also have a lost some photo albums belonging to users, as well as not being able to display them properly.
Facebook’s Bugs & Known Issues page says that this can happen when the site is undergoing maintenance, and advises users to wait a few hours to see if the photos reappear. However, in the case of the users who have posted to the community forums this issue has been affecting individuals for several weeks now.
So as ever, we’d strongly advise that you regularly backup your content from the social networks you use, just in case something like this happens to any of your accounts.
